Progress of the Rare Gas Mass Spectrometry Technique for 40Ar-39Ar Dating

  • Rare gas mass spectrometry is a basic prerequisite for obtaining high-precision 40Ar-39Ar dating data. This paper reviewed the development of noble gas mass spectrometry technique at home and abroad. On this basis, the problems and bottlenecks encountered in the application of noble gas mass spectrometry in 40Ar-39Ar dating were discussed. The development of multi-collector rare gas mass spectrometer with higher sensitivity and higher resolution is still an important means to promote the progress of 40Ar-39Ar dating technique in the future. Meanwhile, it is essential to establish the gas extraction techniques by laser melting, coupled with the very compact gas purification system with extremely low background, for taking advantage of the noble gas mass spectrometer in 40Ar-39Ar dating. These aspects are all important for the breakthrough of 40Ar-39Ar dating technique in the field of dating for extremely young samples.
